Break big jobs into small prompts

One giant prompt for a big job usually gets a long, thin answer. A few small prompts in a row, each building on the last, get you something you can actually use.

Why one big prompt falls short

Ask for a business plan, a price list and a launch post all at once, and the AI has to rush every part. You get three thin answers and no chance to steer.

A prompt chain splits the job into steps. You send the first prompt, read the answer, then send the next one in the same chat. Each step can use what came before. And you can fix a wrong turn at step two, before it spoils steps three, four and five.

Before

plan my bakery's grand opening, with a budget, a schedule, social posts and a flyer

After

Step 1: Ask me 5 questions about my bakery and the opening. Step 2: Using my answers, list the 6 main jobs to get done, in order. Step 3: Make a simple budget for those jobs, under $1,500 in total. Step 4: Write 3 social posts for the week before. Step 5: Write the words for a one page flyer.

Same job, five small prompts, each sent after you read the answer before it. Each one gets the AI's full attention, and you can change course at any step.

A simple pattern for most chains

  1. Ask questions first. Start by having the AI interview you, so every later step uses your real details. See let AI ask you questions first.
  2. Plan. Get a list of the parts or steps, and fix the plan before any real work starts.
  3. Build one part at a time. Write or work out each part in its own prompt.
  4. Review. Ask the AI to check the whole thing against your goal and point out gaps or mistakes.
  5. Finish. Ask for the final version in the format you need, ready to use.

You are a patient project helper. We will work on this in steps, one at a time. My goal: [the big job, like planning a garage sale or writing a short ebook] Step 1 only: ask me up to 5 questions that will shape the plan, then wait for my answers. After I answer, give me a numbered plan of 4 to 6 steps and stop there. Do not start any step until I say go.

Tips for running a chain

  • Stay in one chat. The AI can only build on answers it can see. A new chat starts from zero.
  • Read before you send the next step. If an answer is off, fix it with a follow-up prompt before moving on. Mistakes grow when you build on them.
  • Keep each step to one job. If a step asks for two things, split it in two.
  • Point back by name. Say "Use the outline from step 2" so the AI knows exactly what to build on.
  • Start fresh when it gets long. Very long chats can lose track of early details. If that happens, ask for a short summary of everything so far, then paste it into a new chat and carry on.

Chains that work well

Big jobA chain that works
A party or a tripQuestions, then a plan, then a budget, then a shopping or packing list
A cover letterPaste the job post, pull out what they want most, match it to your experience, then write the letter
A month of social postsQuestions about your business, then a theme for each week, then the posts, then a check for repeats
Learning a new skillCheck what you know, then a 4 week plan, then the first lesson, then a short quiz

Business owners can run the same chain for every new customer, like a welcome message, a first check-in and a review request. Find ideas for your trade on Prompts for your job.

Do not want to plan the steps yourself? Describe your goal in the step-by-step prompts tool and it writes the chain for you.
